WEYMOUTH, Mass. — Weymouth's planning board is considering a proposal to install more than a dozen surveillance cameras in the public housing complex, and the reactions from residents are mixed.
"I think it's a good idea to put some cameras in here, 17 is a little overkill," said resident Jean Pike.
Residents at Lakeview Manor told FOX25 drugs and criminal activity are rampant, and some welcome the watchful eye of police, who will be monitoring the video feed.
"My mother, she has her own cameras put up around the house, Xfinity on the go, she has that around the house for our safety so it doesn't bother me at all," said Danyella McCoy.
But others worry about just what those cameras will capture.
"To be facing down the street, and they will have night vision and capability of zooming in," said Pike.
Pike said she believes city officials have failed to notify residents about the plan, and residents said they want to know where the cameras will be stationed, how they will be used, and who will have access to the video.
"If there's going to be somebody sitting there watching it all times, I think it's a huge waste of money, huge waste of tax dollars," said Victoria Cooper, a resident.
FOX25 wanted more details as well and reached out to city councilors, the mayor's office, the police chief, and the head of the housing authority Friday.
Only housing authority officials responded, but would not comment.
The city will likely make a final decision by the end of November.
