WESTWOOD, Mass. — A spray of mace at Frugal Fannie's in Westwood sent a dozen people to a Massachusetts hospital.
Firefighters responded to
Mace was accidentally discharged inside the women's apparel store in Westwood on Monday afternoon, making people sick, according to fire officials.
Fire officials say 11 people inside the store and one firefighter have been hospitalized.
The fire department believes it was pepper spray that a store employee unknowingly sprayed.
Store owners say an employee picked up a small cannister by the registers with no label on it that did have a keychain hook.
"One of our staff members picked it up, and sprayed it thinking it was perfume," Frugal Fannie's co-founder Kathleen Doxer said. "That started this whole chain reaction."
The discharge is not regarded to be suspicious.
The store re-opened shortly after the incident after firefighters cleared out the scene.
