Westborough middle school sends letter home after 'selfies' sold

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The principal of Gibbons Middle School sent a letter home to parents recently warning them about "the unintended consequences of students sharing provocative 'selfie' photos."

Principal Jack Foley noted that guidance counselors have recently "addressed an issue in which members of our student body have shared provocative photos via their cell phone(s)."

Though he didn't get into specifics about how many students were sending photos, or what happened after the photos were sent, Westborough police officials stated that the department received a report on Jan. 31 that three middle school girls who sent "inappropriate photos" of themselves learned that a 15-year-old male student at Westborough High School had obtained and was selling the photos.

Foley said the school worked with Westborough High School and local law enforcement officials to create a response to the situation. He did not elaborate on what exactly that response was.

In addition to the school's response, Foley urged parents to talk with their children "about the unintended and potentially long term consequences that misusing social media can have," as well as review the contents of their children's electronic devices.

The 15-year-old teen will appear in Worcester Juvenile Court on a summons for disseminating obscene material of a minor, according to police.
