SHREWSBURY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- International Animal Rescue, the Shrewsbury based charity that saved Budi, announced another milestone in the baby orangutan's recovery.
Budi was rescued in Borneo after his previous owner turned him over to authorities and admitted he was very sick. He was in a chicken cage for 10 months and only given condensed milk for nourishment. When he was rescued by IAR, Budi was suffering from malnutrition, severe anemia and a metabolic disease affecting his bones.
"We cannot even begin to imagine how much pain this small baby has suffered," Karmele L Sanchez, vet and IAR's Program Director in Indonesia, said.
She went on to say that he cried when moved by doctors because of the pain and that it's "really amazing that Budi's been able to survive this long."
The baby orangutan has been improving over the last few weeks after constant care. He's now able to temporarily sit up on his own, drink from a bottle and open his mouth on his own to eat.
