PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Hundreds of youth football players on the South Shore may have to find a new place to play after someone trashed their field over the weekend.
Plymouth police say someone drove through an unlocked gate at Forges Field and did donuts in the middle of the practice field, tearing up the grass and leaving some deep ruts.
"When we have to keep the kids off the field because of vandalism, it's a tough pill to swallow," said Barry DeBlasio, Plymouth Director of Community Resources.
Police were out investigating the vandalism Wednesday. They don't know who did the donuts, but are confident it's an SUV or pickup truck.
"You damage a field that, that means kids can't practice on it," said DeBlasio.
More than 500 kids practice on the field every week, including for flag football. The field may not be playable for Saturday's games, since the divots could pose a safety risk. They may be forced to use other nearby fields as a back up.
"We have three leagues with upwards of eight to ten teams per league," said Frank Livera, Assistant Plymouth Recreation Department.
The greens keeper is hoping to salvage the field for play this weekend. He's cutting the grass then his crew will top dress the damage.
There are no cameras at the field or anywhere inside the Athletic Complex, which the town says they are now looking into buying.
Anyone with information should call Plymouth police.
