MALDEN, Mass. — Homes and businesses in Malden went without power Sunday after an underground fire.

Crews worked to restore power after putting out the underground fire, which shot through a manhole shortly after noon.

National Grid shut off power to an entire block of Main Street, near Florence Street. Several businesses and dozens of residents went without electricity for hours. Store owner Ani Vyas shot video showing the thick, black smoke billowing from the ground.

Vyas and his customers evacuated the Indian grocery store as the fire department arrived. National Grid spent all day and night working to repair extensive underground damage believed to be caused by a faulty underground cable.

Workers told FOX25 that some residents were left without heat while crews worked to fix the problem.

The power was restored overnight. As of early Monday morning, there were no reported outages in the area.
