UMass soccer players accused of sending vulgar tweets

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- UMass Boston soccer players are accused of sending vulgar and offensive tweets to a former New England Revolution player.

For UMass, it was a day of celebration with a new president sworn in, but also a day of social media shame.

UMass student Anirudh Pradhn said, "Everyone is free to tweet whatever they want because it's a free country. But that doesn't mean you tweet whatever you want."

Three men's soccer players at UMass Boston are basically accused of "whatever they want." Sending out sometimes vulgar posts on Twitter, including an attack on Taylor Twellman, a former star player for the New England Revolution.

Saurabh Raud, another UMass Boston student said, "People should be allowed to post what they want. But there should be some self-restraint that people should exercise."

There was little self-restraint there, as the tweets attack Twellman for his stance against young soccer players heading balls. Something medical experts say can result in concussions.

"That's why soccer doesn't grow in the USA," he wrote. "Quit everything you do."

And he calls Twellman an insulting, vulgar name. Twellman tweeted back.

UMass says the athletes involved will be disciplined.

The school released the following statement: "We hold our student-athletes to the highest standards of conduct and do not tolerate this kind of behavior on social media, or anywhere else. These student-athletes will face disciplinary action."
