Two fox attacks reported in Derry, NH

DERRY, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Two fox attacks were reported in Derry, N.H. this week.

The most recent attack happened at Humphrey Park where lots of little kids play. Police say the girl who was bitten was playing when that fox spotted her and attacked.

"Child slid down the end of this slide and when she got off this fox was right there and grabbed her by the ankle," Captain Vern Thomas said.

Police say the animal latched on and at first refused to let go.

"A couple adults that were supervising came over and stomped on this animal to get it to let go and it didn't initially let go, but eventually it was scared off," he said.

It's the second attack in two days in Derry. On Wednesday, police say a fox pounced on a boy playing on his trampoline on Schurman Drive.

"The fox chased the child and knocked the child down. Mom came out, rescued the child and brought the child in. As she was doing that the fox chased the two of them but she was able to get into the house successfully," Thomas said.

Neighbors say the boys parents reached out shortly after, warning them to keep their kids and animals inside.

"I had no intention of letting the kids play outside and I didn't. They had to stay in," a neighbor said.

N.H. wildlife officials found the fox in the area and put it down after hours of searching Thursday.

The little girl was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked. The fox will now be sent to a state lab to be analyzed and tested for rabies.
