Tufts students end 55-hour occupation of president's office

MEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - A group of Tufts University students has ended an occupation of the school president's office after 55 hours of protesting Tufts' investments in fossil fuel companies.

Students in the group Tufts Climate Action say they left President Anthony Monaco's office in Ballou Hall on Friday after obtaining an agreement to meet with Peter Dolan, chairman of Tufts' board of trustees.

Thirty-three students and alumni began the occupation Wednesday morning. University officials say 17 of them remained in the office Friday.

The Boston Globe reports that university officials on Friday told students taking part in the sit-in that they may face disciplinary action.

Similar protests have been held at universities nationwide, calling on schools to divest from fossil fuel companies. Demonstrators say the burning of fossil fuels is causing global warming.
