North Carolina man accused of punching high school referee in the face at basketball game

MITCHELL COUNTY, N.C. — A 47-year-old North Carolina man was arrested and charged after authorities said he hit a referee at a high school basketball game Tuesday night in Mitchell County, WLOS-TV reported.

Jerry Dale Jones, 47, of Avery County, approached the ref after a game in the Mitchell County School gym, according to arrest warrants.

Jones was arrested and held on a $5,000 bond.

Dale allegedly pointed his finger and cussed at the ref before punching him in the face.

He was charged with assault on a sports official, disorderly conduct and resisting a public officer.
