HOUSTON — A 78-year-old great-grandmother survived a harrowing car crash Monday after fleeing a southwest Houston convenience store when gunfire erupted.

The woman, who asked not to be identified given the violent nature of what she witnessed, told KTRK that she owes God her life and the lives of the people in the home her car crashed into.

“I’m so thankful for my life, but the main thing that I’m thankful for is that I didn’t hurt anybody. Had I hurt those people that live in that house ... they could have just buried me right then and there because I never would have gotten over the fact that I had taken another human being’s life,” the woman told the TV station.

The woman – who suffered bruises, swelling and an eye injury – is expected to make a full recovery, but she remains a little unclear on exactly what happened, noting she walked out of the store, witnessed the violent shooting, fled in a panic and, apparently, lost consciousness. When she awoke, her car had crashed into the home, KTRK reported.

According to the Houston Police Department, an unidentified man parked a black Chrysler 300 next to a parked vehicle that Mark Jefferson, 52, was sitting in at the convenience store. Investigators told the TV station that a discussion between the two men erupted in gunfire, and the suspect fled.

Jefferson is recovering in the hospital with wounds to his abdomen and arm, KTRK reported.
