2 dead, 6 injured in shooting near Rutgers University

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Two people died and six others were injured in an early-morning shooting near the Rutgers University campus Sunday.

The Rutgers University Police Department confirmed the off-campus incident happened at around 1:30 a.m. when an unknown person or persons opened fire on Delafield Street, Fox News reported.

“Those injured were transported to an area hospital and injuries are reported to be serious,” Kenneth Cop, the Rutgers police chief, said in a statement. “Information as to the description(s) of the perpetrator(s) is limited at this time, and the investigation is active and ongoing.”

Though the shooting took place near Rutgers, authorities said there is no evidence of a connection between the shooting and the university, CNN reported.

“Thus far, the investigation has determined that there is no affiliation with Rutgers University or its students,” the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement obtained by the network.

Two male victims were pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, both Fox and CNN confirmed.
