Tips for preventing mosquito bites

(MyFoxBoston.com) - Summer means the increased risk of mosquito bites and with that comes the potential for mosquito-borne diseases including eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile virus (WNV).

The following tips come from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

  • Prevent mosquitoes from breeding in standing water by turning over unused flower pots, buckets, wheelbarrows, and garbage cans; removing leaves and other debris that can clog gutters and trap water; disposing of or covering old tires; and covering swimming pools and kiddie pools when not in use.
  • Mosquito-proof your home by ensuring that window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from getting into the house.
  • Use insect repellant when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are more likely to be biting. DEET is recommended and according to the American Academy of Pediatrics it is safe for children over the age of 2 months.
  • Wear long sleeve shirts, socks and full-length pants, when outdoors.
