A thief in South Boston spent their weekend snatching a Mother's Day gift from someone's doorstep.

It didn't take much for Jennifer Statsky to realize that someone had grabbed a gift she had order from Amazon for a grieving family friend.

The present was among a number of heartfelt gifts that never arrived in their neighborhood this weekend after a string of package thefts.

"It's just not fair, there were all Mother's Day gifts," said Statsky. "It hurts, it really does."

Statsky had ordered the gift with the guarantee that it would arrive at her South Boston apartment in the 500 block of East 2nd Street before Mother's Day. While Amazon dutifully delivered the package, someone was quick to nab it from Statsky's front steps.

"Who could do something like that, why would you take something that's not yours," said Statsky.

The gift in question was a necklace, similar to the one Statsky has around her neck, intended for a family friend who just lost a son due to medical complications during a procedure. The missing necklace was supposed to hold his ashes.

"It's a little blue one that says always in my heart," said Statsky. "It was her only son, we wanted to get it to her, we would've went back to see her today."

Statsky says it's heartbreaking to not have the gift for her friend on her first Mother's Day without her son. She added that it's infuriating to not have it because someone stole it.

Other South End residents say package thieves have become so predictable that many don't have items delivered to the neighborhood anymore.

"It's frustrating, I would like to have my stuff delivered here," said Emily McDonald, a neighbor.

Statsky and other neighbors who fell victims to package thieves hope that those who keep taking what isn't theirs will eventually get what's coming to them.

"How would you feel if someone did this to you, it's not right in any way, shape or form," said Statsky. "Karma will get them, that's all I can say."

Now that the theft has been reported, Amazon will be sending Statsky another necklace, which won't be arriving until a few days after Mother's Day.
