A large tanker carrying thousands of gallons of fuel rolled over Thursday morning on Sisson Road in Harwich, began leaking all over the road and forced the closure of a supermarket and roadway as hazmat teams work to clear the scene.

The early-morning rollover happened around 3:30 a.m. in front of the Shaw's supermarket at 18 Sisson Road. The tanker was heading toward Route 28 when it overturned, officials said, landing on its side and blocking the road in both directions as gallons of fuel spilled out and pooled around it.

Power was also cut to some nearby streets following the crash and police said it likely won't be restored until at least noon.

Harwich police said Sisson Road, as well as Shaw's and businesses in the Shaw's plaza, will remain closed "throughout the day and likely into the evening," as hazmat teams from Rhode Island and Massachusetts work to offload the fuel from the overturned tanker onto two other tankers. Route 28 is open, police said.

It's not clear how many gallons were spilled in the rollover.
