Suspect arrested after Ashmont shooting leaves one critical

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police have arrested a man who they believe is the suspect behind a shooting that took place near the Ashmont MBTA station Monday evening.

At around 6:30 p.m., officers responded to Ashmont Station on the red line in Dorchester, where they found a 19-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Detectives worked with the police department's Real Time Crime Center to view footage from police network cameras in the area and identified a suspect, and the direction toward which he fled. Nearby officers patrolling the area found a man matching the suspect's description on Wrentham Street, police said.

After a short foot chase, officers caught the suspect, 21-year-old Tyrell Griffiths, of Boston, and also recovered a loaded .45 caliber gun.

Griffiths was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

He is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital and was listed Monday night in critical but stable condition.
