NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — New Bedford police are asking the public for help in locating a man who tried to rob a local convenience store with a knife.
The store owner made sure the robber wasn’t going to get away so easily though after he grabbed a baseball bat and fought back, swinging several times until the suspect fled the store.
The entire incident was captured by surveillance cameras.
"He starts threatening us...he gave me a black bag and said fill it now, fill it now," said Wessam Mohamed, the store owner.
In the store at the time was Mohamed’s wife and 10-year-old son.
At one point the suspect tries to swing the knife at the owner but then runs out of the store, with the owner behind him. At that point, Mohamed said there was a getaway car waiting.
Mohamed said he has to work every day to help pay for his wife cancer treatments and he takes his profits seriously.
"Even if it was one dollar, I work for. The dollar is not for me it's for my kid. It's not yours," he said.
Mohamed said he opened the store a year ago after moving to the area of Egypt.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police.
