STOUGHTON, Mass. — A Massachusetts State Trooper was severely assaulted after pulling over a man for speeding early Saturday morning in Randolph, according to State Police.
Just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, the trooper clocked Devin Fuller, 29, of Boston, driving 81 miles per hour for at least one mile in a 55 mile per hour zone on 93 South in Randolph. He followed the car onto Route 24 South and pulled Fuller over.
The trooper learned that Fuller’s license had been suspended.
Fuller repeatedly refused to step out of his car when asked, according to police. While the trooper tried to get Fuller out of his car, Fuller allegedly punched the trooper in his face and continued punching him while tackling him to the ground, driving his face in the pavement, police said.
Fuller grabbed the trooper with both arms and drove him 15 to 20 feet into and across two travel lanes in front of an oncoming car, police said. That driver was able to quickly change lanes to avoid hitting the trooper.
The trooper and Fuller fell to the ground and continued fighting when Fuller pulled at the trooper’s duty belt and reached for his service weapon, police said. The trooper put both hands on his weapon to secure it.
An off-duty trooper driving in his own car on Route 24 saw the scuffle and pulled over to help the trooper. Fuller got back in his car and drove across two travel lanes down Route 24 at an estimated speed of 140 miles per hour, police said.
The trooper got back in his patrol car and chased after Fuller, who left Route 24 onto Route 139 in Stoughton into an industrial park, according to police.
Other troopers responded to help, including a K9 unit, the off-duty trooper, and Stoughton Police.
Fuller’s car was found abandoned in the industrial park and the trooper and K9 unit searched on foot through a wooded area. Fuller was found and arrested by Stoughton Police behind a Hampton Inn & Suites on Page Street, police said.
While searching Fuller’s car, police found a controlled substance, marijuana, THC and plastic bags consistent with packaging and distribution of illegal narcotics, police said.
Fuller, who declined medical attention, was booked in Foxboro and charged with:
- Assault with intent to murder
- Assault and battery on a police officer
- Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
- Failure to stop for police
- Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
- Reckless operation of a motor vehicle
- Resisting arrest
- Possession of a Class D narcotic with intent to distribute
- Possession of a Class C narcotic with intent to distribute
- Operating after license suspension
- Speeding
- Disturbing the peace
Fuller was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail and was brought to Ash Street Jail in New Bedford. He is expected to be arraigned in Stoughton District Court on Monday, police said.
The trooper who was assaulted was treated for contusions and lacerations to his head and upper body as well as a lower body injury at Milton Hospital, police said.
