BOSTON — A promise of unclaimed money targeting potential victims all around the country appears to have roots here in Massachusetts.
The State Treasurer's Office is warning people to be on the lookout for a letter saying they have unclaimed sweepstakes winnings worth $750,000.
The bogus letter uses the logo of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators and the address of the Massachusetts Treasurer in Boston.
One big red flag is that it asks people to send $2,200 in money orders before they can claim their winnings.
“We really stress to individuals that our service is free. If anyone ever asks for money, then you know something's wrong,” Assistant Treasurer Mark Bracken said.
The Treasurer's Office says this letter is being sent to people in several states and has already tricked one woman into handing over her money.
