WORCESTER, Mass. — A no swimming advisory has been issued to a Worcester lake due to a "sanitary sewer overflow," says the city.

Along with swimming, boating and other recreational activities are prohibited at Lake Quinsigamond until further notice.

The sewage leaked into the lake for about an hour and 15 minutes Tuesday morning, said the city, due to a problem at a sewage pumping station.

The bacteria can cause illness if ingested; the city will continue to monitor and sample water.

Lake Quinsigamond offers swimming, sailing and fishing, and is "extensively" used for rowing crew regattas, according to the state.
