Sen. McCain to attend rally for Mass. GOP's Gomez

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. John McCain is in Massachusetts to campaign for and help raise cash for Gabriel Gomez, a fellow Republican and Navy veteran who is running in a special election for the U.S. Senate.

The Arizona Republican told a rally at a VFW post in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood that he believes Gomez to be the "the next generation of leadership in this country."

McCain said Gomez would be a bipartisan voice in the Senate who would support wider background checks for gun owners and immigration reform among other issues.

The Markey campaign strongly defends the congressman's record on national security.

Gomez said his opponent in the June 25 election, Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, for having what he called a weak record on homeland security issues.
