RUTLAND, Mass. — Two officers were able to rescue a woman from a swamp Thursday by following the footprints they discovered by the woman's car.

Officers Brent Carpenter and Sam Perrotto had been on their way to another call when they noticed a car on the side of Pomagusset Road, also known as Route 56.

"At that point, we both knew there just wasn't something right," Perrotto said.

The car had its emergency flashers on; no one was inside. Officers then noticed a set of footprints leading onto the Mass Central Rail.

The officers followed the footprints down Pomagusset Road to a swampy area, where they heard a woman.

"We heard a yell. The woman saying help me, help me," said Carpenter.

The officers eventually found the 70-year-old woman partially submerged in the swamp and hanging onto a tree. The officers rescued the woman, who was then taken by snowmobile to an ambulance, then to the hospital.

The woman was conscious and alert when taken from the scene, but very cold.
