Rondo nears return to Celtics after knee injury

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Rajon Rondo will work out with the Maine Red Claws prior to being reassigned to Celtics.

The team made the announcement via a statement Wednesday.

"Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab and this is the next step," said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. "This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout."

Rondo, a four-time All Star and the only remaining member of the Celtics' 2008 NBA championship team, has not played since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in January 2013.

The Red Claws are a development league team affiliated with the Celtics.
