FALMOUTH, Mass. — Two teens had marijuana in their system and were driving recklessly when they were killed in a car crash in December, according to the state’s report on the crash.

The report released Monday indicates James Lavin, 17, was driving too fast and illegally crossed a double yellow line to pass a car when he lost control and ran off the road. The resulting crash killed Lavin and his passenger, Owen Higgins.

Both Falmouth High School students were hockey players and were memorialized by teams across the state – including the Boston Bruins.

Lavin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Higgins was flown to a hospital where he later died. According to the medical examiner’s office, both men had marijuana in their system.

Police say there was no evidence environmental factors played a role in the crash.

The investigation was conducted by the Falmouth Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section.
