Quincy firefighter dies unexpectedly

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) — The Quincy Fire Department is in mourning following the unexpected death of a 10-year veteran who was responding to an emergency call.

Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Jackson says 37-year-old firefighter John Austin became unresponsive at the West Quincy firehouse Monday as he and other firefighters were getting ready to go out on an emergency call and was later pronounced dead at Quincy Medical Center.

Jackson tells The Patriot Ledger (http://bit.ly/12Az1tH ) the cause of death remains under investigation.

Austin was a Quincy High School graduate and joined the Marines before becoming a city firefighter in 2002.

Jackson says Austin was "highly regarded" by his colleagues.
