WAKEFIELD, Mass. — An 18-year-old was charged with assault and battery with intent to murder after allegedly stabbing another teen with a golf club shaft while high.

Prosecutors said Curtis Day, 18, of Beverly, and two others were in Breakheart Reservation after taking heroin, marijuana, and LSD Tuesday. A fight broke out and Day allegedly took a golf club he had been using as a walking stick and stabbed his friend, 18-year-old Matthew Dow, in the shoulder.

"There was a broken off shaft of a golf club that had entered through the back area of Mr. Dow's right shoulder and exited through the front of his body," Assistant Middlesex District Attorney Julie Kunkel said.

After the stabbing, Day allegedly stole a vehicle and fled toward Main Street where he was involved in a crash.

"He appeared disoriented he did make statements to police at that time admitting to police to taking LSD and heroin. He also made further statements stating 'I'm dead' and also that he killed his friend at Breakheart," Kunkel said,

Day was charged with charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with intent to murder, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

"The police report states that they had all taken lsd and there was an attack on Mr. Dow by Mr. Barry, so it's very unlikely, I believe, there's going to be any credible evidence," defense attorney Thomas Glynn said.

Dow suffered life threatening injuries, but is now stable.
