ACTON, Mass. — A woman found in the middle of an Acton road Tuesday morning had died after she was hit by a car, according to police.
Emergency responders were called to Revolutionary Road in Acton shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning when the woman was found unconscious in the road.
Police say the 75-year-old woman was walking her dog when she was hit by a car. A red BMW SUV was towed away from the scene, though police have not confirmed that it was the vehicle involved.
That SUV is registered to a home just feet from the scene. Police say the victim was hit by the back of the vehicle. It's possible the driver was back out of a driveway at the time of the crash.
“It's an ongoing investigation. We're working with the Mass State Police and the District Attorney's Office, as well as our department investigating," a police officer said.
The driver did leave the scene but later returned. Police are investigating whether the driver even realized they had hit someone.
The woman was reportedly breathing when rescuers rushed her to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she later died.
One of the neighbors who called 911 said she found a dog that the woman had been walking at the time of the crash.
