HALIFAX, Mass. — Halifax Police are searching for whoever used fireworks to blow up several mailboxes.
Firefighters spent the day driving around town, picking up remnants of Roman candles that were apparently set off after midnight Monday.
Several mailboxes on Brandeis Circle were blown to pieces.
“It was like 12:30 or 1:00 in the morning. There was a loud explosion that we heard, several of them,” said Matt Abruzese, who had his mailbox destroyed. “It wasn’t until [Monday] when we looked at the mailbox that we realized that someone had set off some sort of firework.”
Halifax Police said several mailboxes stolen from homes in Middleboro were also found Sunday tossed in the yard of a home on Laurel Street. The stolen mailboxes were returned to Middleboro’s Postmaster.
Meanwhile, residents in the area are angry at the whole situation.
"I grew up in this neighborhood," Abruzese said. "When I was a kid, we set off fireworks, but we never blew up mailboxes. We’d like dig a hole in a backyard, set off a couple, ‘Ooh, ahh!’ But this is just silly."
Now, residents are hoping investigators can track down whoever is responsible.
"Whoever did this, the neighborhood’s getting really pissed off," Abruzese said. "Pardon my French, but the language that they’ve used is a lot harsher, and they’re going to be watching."
Police said they’re also investigating a number of car break-ins over the past few weeks.
It’s unclear if any of these crimes are related.
