WORCESTER, Mass. — Police are still searching for the man who robbed a Worcester Cab Driver at gunpoint and then beat him.
According to a source the victim is in his 50s, he's a father who works long hours to put food on the table for his family.
Drivers working for Yellow Cab in Worcester tell Boston 25 News reporter Malini Basu they are now working in fear.
"They told me they robbed a cab driver," said William, who works for Yellow Cab. "I feel very scared now."
They just heard about their co-worker being held at gunpoint, robbed and then beaten.
Just after 12:30 p.m., the driver was waiting for a passenger between Belmont and Everard Streets. That was when the suspect jumped in the back seat, as if he wanted a ride.
"Then (the suspect) assaulted him and demanded money. The cab driver, after being struck, got out of the cab, the other individual got in front of the cab and drove away," said Worcester Police Department Lt. Sean Murtha.
"We aren't making as much to take care of ourselves, cab drivers don't make that much," said Mwaura Bonface, a cab driver. "I try to get enough to get my child support in. I have no choice."
This, however, isn't the only assault on a cab driver that has happened lately. Three weeks ago, another cab driver was strangled during an armed robbery, which happened just up the street from where this incident occurred.
"He lost his keys, money...he doesn't know if it was gunpoint, they held something to his neck," Bonaface said.
"We have nothing to protect ourselves," said William Poku, who works as a cab driver. "I protect myself in the name of Jesus Christ. I pray when I come to the job."
The drivers are hoping the suspect gets caught. They say it's not fair that they are working so hard and someone is just taking their money away from them.
