MIDDLETON, Mass. — A man working for a landscaping company has been seriously injured after a car crashed into the lawn mower he was riding on.
Middleton Police said they responded to the crash at around 5:30 p.m. at 36 Village Road.
Authorities said a pizza delivery man was driving on Village Road when he lost control of the car after reaching for his cellphone, which had fallen on the floor of the car.
Upon losing control of the car, the driver hit a concrete pillar and then a fire hydrant. The impact caused the car to then flip over, eventually striking the man on the lawn mower, police said.
Sky 25 flew over the scene of the crash where a partially overturned car could be seen resting on the right side of the road, near the entrance to the Ironwood condos.
The victim was rushed to Beverly Hospital and then flown to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was also transported to Beverly Hospital.
Residents at the Ironwood Apartments who witnessed the crash described the scene as "horrifying" as they rushed over to help the victim.
"The kid got out of the car, he was walking, but he hit our landscape guy on the mower, and the girl who saw the whole thing she was walking her down and said he just came down," said one resident. "He said he dropped the phone and was trying to pick it up."
Witnesses provided aid to the man on the lawn mower, who they say was in his 20s.
"Some residents pulled up and they had towels in their car and they were putting them under his head but his face was all bloody," said another resident.
No charges have been filed at this time.
Middleton and State Police continue to investigate the crash.
