Police: Drunk driver crashes into Worcester police cruiser

WORCESTER, Mass. — A Worcester police officer’s vehicle was allegedly hit by a drunk driver early Friday morning at the intersection of Pleasant and Irving Streets.

The officer was driving east on Pleasant Street at approximately 1:00 a.m. through the intersection when his cruiser was hit by another vehicle that ran a red light.

The driver of the second vehicle was identified as Michael Nuttall, a 27-year-old man from Worcester, said police.

According to police, the officers who arrived on the scene said they detected a strong alcoholic beverage odor coming from Nuttall. Afterward, Nuttall performed several field sobriety tests and failed, said police.  According to the breathalyzer, Nuttall’s blood alcohol level measured at more than twice the legal limit.

He was arrested and charged with operating under the influence (second offense), operating to endanger and a red light violation.

After the crash, the officer received assistance from paramedics and was later transported to a local hospital for minor injuries sustained from airbag deployment.  Nuttall was not injured during the accident.
