WORCESTER, Mass. — A parole hearing was held Thursday for one of the men convicted of killing Paxton’s police chief more than 20 years ago.
Jamie Richards was 22 at the time of the murder, and now he’s seeking an early release.
Chief Robert Mortell was shot and killed in 1994 while helping police in Holden search for three suspects in connection with a pair of home break-ins and carjacking.
Mortell was shot after he spotted the men in the woods.
Richards was convicted of second-degree murder because he didn’t actually pull the trigger.
The lead investigator in the case, who is now the Massachusetts State Police colonel, testified against Richards.
