WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — A driver was killed late Monday following a wrong-way crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
The crash happened around 11:55 p.m. The driver, a 28-year-old Rutland man, had been driving eastbound on the westbound side. The driver suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
The wrong-way vehicle struck two other vehicles head-on, sending four people to the hospital with injuries.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown. The Mass. Pike was shut down for around three hours during the initial investigation.
One couple who saw the driver told FOX25 they didn't know what was happening.
"I was heading right at him and he was heading right at me," Jim Floyd said.
Jim was driving while his wife Donnamarie was in the passenger seat.
"It was like 'was that just a car? That was just a car going the wrong way on the Mass Pike," she said.
Donnamarie and Jeff both said they have been experiencing survivors guilt since they learned about the deadly crash.
"You feel guilty because us being lucky means somebody else wasn't so lucky,” Jim said.
"You have to just be thankful for everyday because you don't know if it's going to be your last,” Donnamarie said.
FOX25's Jessica Reyes was at the scene of the crash Tuesday morning reporting the latest details as they became available.
