WASHINGTON, D.C. — The sinking of the El Faro cargo ship was one of the most challenging and resource intensive investigations the National Transportation Safety Board has ever completed.

The NTSB released a video Tuesday summarizing how investigators determined the cause of the tragedy and discusses associated recommendations to improve marine safety.

All 33 crew members, including three who had ties to Massachusetts, died when the vessel sank on October 1, 2015.

The video highlights the three missions undertaken to retrieve the voyage data recorder and document the wreckage, which was found nearly three miles beneath the ocean’s surface.
