BOSTON — A Northeastern University student who says she was raped on campus is now suing the school.

At a news conference Thursday, Morgan Helfman claimed the university misrepresents safety statistics and fails to properly respond to incidents of sexual assault.

"I want the school to be held responsible and know what they did was wrong," she said.

The 21-year old from New Jersey is now in her fourth year at Northeastern. She claims she went to a party on Halloween night of 2013 when she was 18-years old. She said the party was hosted by a resident assistant and there was alcohol provided. She admits to drinking too much and becoming sick.

A male classmate walked her back to their residential hall, she said, and instead of taking Helfman to her room, he allegedly took her to his dorm and raped her.

She reported what happened to campus police, but says a school disciplinary panel failed to take appropriate action.

"At the time, he should have been expelled. At the least they should have moved out of my dorm, the least they could have done,” she said.

Her lawsuit claims Northeastern under reports campus crime stats, including the number of sexual assaults. She also says the school has inadequate disciplinary procedures, negligent security practices and violates both state and federal laws about the handling of sexual assault.

Helfman says her goal is to change how the school handles cases like hers.

Northeastern says it has not seen the lawsuit, but says the safety of students is the university's top priority.
