New York newspaper publishes names, addresses of registered gun owners

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A New York newspaper published a map that is raising some eyebrows across the nation.

The Journal News recently released an interactive map that features the names and addresses of handgun owners registered with the Westchester County Clerk's office.

As the report highlights, this information is available to the public under New York state law with a Freedom of Information Law request.

On Monday, two firefighters were shot and killed while responding to a fire in Webster, NY. Two others were injured.

The newspaper notes however, that information regarding specific permits an individual has been issued, the number of handguns they own, and the types of handguns they own was not made available to them by the clerk's office. They say some New York residents are looking to change the amount of information the public can obtain about gun owners in the wake of two recent shootings.

On Dec. 14, first graders and teachers at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn. were killed by a 20-year-old gunman who later took his own life.
