FORE RIVER, Mass. — Nineteen years after a temporary bridge was put in on Route 3A, the permanent Fore River Bridge span will be installed next week.
The bridge, which spans 324 feet and weighs 2.9 million pounds, will connect Quincy and Weymouth over the Fore River.
The entire bridge project is expected to be complete by 2018, two years behind schedule and at least $1 million over budget.
"It's absolutely critical to get jobs done on time and on budget but it's equally important that we stand up for quality and for our contractual rights," Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack said.
Drivers will continue to use the temporary bridge until the permanent bridge is fully installed.
