NEEDHAM, Mass. — Starting on Saturday, September 2, the Needham MBTA Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended during the weekends for construction.
The MBTA says connecting services will be available while they install a Positive Train Control (PTC) system.
PTC is a federally mandated, safety control measure that prevents train-on-train collisions and human error.

Throughout the next few months, the system will be installed on all the commuter rail lines, and during the installation process, rail service will be suspended due to safety measures.
During construction, connecting MBTA bus and subway services will be available from Needham Line stations:
- From Needham Heights, Needham Center, and Needham Junction, the Route 59 bus service connects to Newton Highlands on the Green Line D Branch and to Watertown Square.
- From West Roxbury, Highland, Bellevue, and Roslindale Village, Bus Routes 35, 36, and 37 connect to and from Forest Hills on the Orange Line, which also serves Ruggles and Back Bay.
- Customers who typically board at Hersey Station are encouraged to travel to Needham Junction or West Roxbury Stations instead as there are no direct connecting MBTA services at Hersey.
