Nashua police search for suspect wanted in connection with shooting

NASHUA, NH (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Nashua Police are searching for a man wanted in connection with a shooting that is the latest in a string of gang-related incidents in the city.

Police said they have an arrest warrant for Angel Flores, for assault and reckless conduct, following a shooting last week on Central Street. Investigators said Flores shot 19-year-old Travis McPherson in a drive-by shooting as retaliation after McPherson was involved in another gang-related incident earlier this year.

"These incidents appear to be targeted, from one group to another," Lt. James Testaverde told FOX25. "No one was looking to target random pedestrians walking down the street."

Still, residents worry about getting caught in the crossfire after a number of gang-related crimes this year.

In April, police said McPherson shot into a crowd on Lemoine Street while two groups with gang ties were squaring off, preparing to brawl. Thirteen people were arrested, including McPherson, and the FBI Safe Streets Gang Task Force began offering assistance to the police department, according to investigators.

Shortly after, investigators said another man was injured in a rolling shootout between two cars that were driving on Pine Street; two people were arrested in that incident.

"It's definitely a problem that needs to be dealt with," said Al Vanlubeeck, who lives around the corner from the sites of both shootings. "Unfortunately most of the time with drive-by shootings, the people who get hurt aren't the people that were getting shot at, it's other people."

Police said they have added extra patrols in the areas of concern and that the department's Street Crimes Unit is working feverishly to combat the issue. Neighbors said they have seen increasing signs of gang activity this summer.

"People repping the same colors, walking around, throwing up the signs and everything," said Richard Fenton.

Others told FOX25 they have taken extra measures to protect themselves and their families - and they just want safe neighborhoods again.

"Nashua was twice voted 'Best place to live in the United States,' and now we're at the bottom. I don't know how it got to that, but it's just not where I want to live anymore," Fenton said.
