MIAA gives 'sportsmanship' award to female golfer who was denied trophy

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The female golfer denied a trophy after winning a boys’ high school golf tournament was given a sportsmanship award by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Emily Nash made national headlines recently when she won the Boys Division III Central Massachusetts golf tournament and was not given the trophy due to MIAA rules.

The Lunenburg golfer was recognized by a handful of professional female golfers and other athletes after the story was spread online.

On Friday, the MIAA presented Nash with an “Achievement and Sportsmanship” award.

“It was a privilege today, before almost 1200 MIAA student-athletes, coaches and administrators, on the occasion of the MIAA’s 24th Annual Sportsmanship Summit to present and recognize Emily Nash for her outstanding sportsmanship and precedent-setting achievement at the Boy’s Division III Central MA Golf Tournament,” MIAA Executive Director Bill Gaine said.

Nash is a member of the Lunenburg boys’ golf team. When the second place finisher in the tournament was awarded the trophy, he offered it to Nash; she declined.

“He came over and said he didn't win the tournament, that I did,” she said. “It was really nice of him and respectful,” she said later.
