Message in a bottle travels across the Atlantic from Nantucket to England

NANTUCKET, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) - A message in a bottle found its way from Nantucket to England and with some luck, the 12-year-old who wrote it hopes to hear back.

FOX25 received video of the man who found the bottle opening it and we decided to reach out the boy who sent it.

"The guy said it was FOX25 news and that a bottle I threw had washed up in England,” 12-year-old Grant Beebe said.

"I thought, are you sure, if it was a prank call or what,” Grant’s mom Kristine Beebe said.

We watched as the bottle-finder, a man named Tom, scraped the sea debris from the bottle with surgical-like precision in order to reveal what was inside.

Then the letter was removed and Tom read the address “USA, Nantucket.”

"I just told him about who I was and about my life and my hobbies and I drew a picture of a shark,” Grant said about the letter.

Grant and his family launched half a dozen letters into the ocean on Jan. 20, 2014.

"It was really cold so as soon as we threw the bottles we got back in the car and went home,” he said.

The Beebes never expected a response, after all the bottles were just a way for Grant's dad, Bruce, to find creative things to do with his kids and they'd tossed messages several times before with only mediocre results.

"We had one to go to Martha's Vineyard, one go down to Long Island Sound,” Bruce said.

But this time, the bottle crossed the Atlantic and wound up in the hands of an Englishman out for a dive more than 3,200 miles away.

"I hope he writes back,” Grant said.
