BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Members of the Bridgewater police and fire departments worked together to help save the life of a 5-year-old girl who nearly drowned in a pool over the weekend.

Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, police received 911 calls from a College Road home reporting a girl had been pulled from a pool and was unresponsive.

When emergency crews arrived at the home, the girl was having CPR performed on her by an off-duty firefighter and Massachusetts State Police trooper, who were both at the home visiting.

A Bridgewater police officer took over CPR and continued until paramedics arrived.

The girl was taken to a Brockton hospital before being flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further treatment.

She regained consciousness a few days later and has since returned home.

According to police, several people were in the back yard near the pool at the time with other children swimming.

At some point the girl tried to reach for a toy from the edge of the in-ground pool, but slipped into the water without a flotation device and was not able to stay above the water.

The investigation showed the girl was underwater for about two minutes before being pulled out by adults.

The incident was determined to be an accident and no charges have been filed.
