Mass. woman sues Trader Joe's, claiming cereal doesn't have enough honey

BOSTON — Trader Joe's is going to court.

A Medford woman is suing Trader Joe's over their Honey Nut O's cereal, claiming that the grocery store chain is misleading consumers because the cereal only has a "minuscule amount of honey."

In a class action lawsuit, Anita Lima says consumers were tricked into paying more for the cereal than they would have been willing to if they knew sugar was the primary sweetener. Each 13.5 oz box of Honey Nut O's costs about $2.29.

"Defendant's branding and packaging of ‘Trader Joe’s Honey Nut O’s’ convey that honey — and not sugar — is its primary sweetener,” the complaint says.

According to Trader Joe's website, the list of ingredients on the box does not specify how much honey is in the cereal.

In the lawsuit filed in Boston federal court on Tuesday, Lima is seeking to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased a box of the cereal in the last five years.
