Mass. plaque at Revolutionary War site missing

BILLERICA (AP) - Police say a plaque that commemorates the day in 1775 when key Revolutionary War figures John Hancock and Samuel Adams hid from British soldiers in a Billerica home has gone missing.

Police say the bronze plaque marking the site of the Amos Wyman Homestead was reported missing Monday but may have been removed before then, possibly by someone who intended to sell it as scrap. Police say bronze sells for about $1.65 per pound.

Bob Kinsman, president of the Billerica Historical Society's board of directors, says the plaque weighs about 100 pounds. He called the incident "sad."

He says in 2005 the plaque was placed on a boulder near the site of the Wyman house. The boulder had an inscription carved into it in 1898 to mark the site.
