Man with 18 OUI offenses crashes into utility pole

FALMOUTH, Mass. — A Mashpee man with 18 prior OUI offenses crashed into a pole Thursday night in Falmouth.

Police said preliminary information shows that a 2005 Toyota Scion was driving north on North Falmouth Highway around 8:15 p.m. when it didn't make the curve. The car went off the road and hit a utility pole.

When emergency officials arrived, the driver was trapped inside and there were live wires on the road.

The man was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a Boston area hospital via MedFlight with serious injuries.

Police said alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash. The driver, 58-year-old Francis Vierkant, has 18 prior drunk driving offenses on his record from Massachusetts and Florida.

He has not been charged for Thursday's crash.

The road was closed for an extended period of time while first responders were on scene.
