PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A young Marine and his family got out of North Carolina just before Hurricane Florence hit and are staying with relatives in Plymouth, but they still don't know when they'll be able to return home.
Marine Corporal Nick Nichols, along with his wife and baby daughter and another car full of family, evacuated their home in New Bern, North Carolina just before Hurricane Florence pounded that state.
"So we had 11 people, four dogs coming up here from New Bern and Wilmington," said Nichols.
The family posted on a Plymouth Facebook page asking for an air mattress and they say the response they got was overwhelming.
The Nichols' sandbagged their home and believe it only suffered some minor damage, including a broken fence. Many of the roads in New Bern are still flooded and it's nearly impossible to drive. Until they can get the all clear to return home, they're staying in Plymouth.
"They helped us out with blankets, sleeping materials, air mattresses, diapers, formula, kennels for the dogs, even the veteran services contacted me and gave us some gift cards," said Nichols.
The Nichols' hope to hit the road later this week, but it all depends on Mother Nature.
