NEWTON, Mass. — Jim Dunlay said he was driving up I-95 North Monday afternoon when he saw his life flash before his eyes.

A metal pipe had fallen off the truck in front of him and before Jim could react it smashed through his front windshield.

"I noticed something fly off the top of it and remember thinking, that's going to hit me,” he said. “I turned my head and the next thing my windshield explodes."

The pipe had slammed into the hood of Dunlay’s car, before hitting the windshield and ending up in his lap. On the way, it sliced through some notebooks on the dashboard.

Dunlay said it instantly reminded him of a family friend Caitlin Clavette killed by something flying through her windshield on I-93 and how fortunate he was.

"All I could think of was Caitlin the girl hit by the manhole cover, definitely lucky,” he said.

When Dunlay had processed what happened he caught up to the truck, but the driver wouldn’t pull over until police arrived.

The pipe that smashed through Dunlay’s windshield is used to winch down straps and secure loads, like the cement that driver was carrying, but the driver said it wasn’t his.

“He just denied it and denied it and said it wasn't his bar,” Dunlay said.

Dunaly said the trucking company was cited by police. FOX25 has reached out to that company for comment but has not heard back.
