SALEM, Mass. — A man was subdued after allegedly attempting to take a police officer's firearm at the North Shore Medical Center.
The man, who was already in police custody and being brought in, was with two police officers when he unsuccessfully tried to take one of their guns. The man had been arrested in connection to a home invasion.
A spokesperson for North Shore Medical told Boston 25 News the incident began just before 8 a.m.
Lynn Police were called in for back up after a 27-year-old man, who was in custody, broke the bed railing he was handcuffed to and then tried to run from his room.
Officers then chased him and police said that, in the struggle, the man tried grabbing an officer's holstered gun.
According to a spokeswoman, an alert was sent to the hospital staff saying there was 'an armed intruder' and that police were responding. Lynn Police later clarified that at no point in time was there an active shooter or anyone roaming the hospital grounds with a firearm.
"It's just really scary, we never really have stuff like that happen, so close," said Jamie Kasper, who lives near the hospital.
He was quickly subdued by officers and medical center staff, and no one in the hospital was ever in danger, a North Shore Medical Center spokesperson said.
The hospital spokeswoman explained that the alert made the incident seem more serious than it was, but that the hospital staff handled the incident based on protocol.
A second alert was later sent to staff to let them know the situation was under control.
