Man killed by Weymouth police is father to Mayor Walsh's girlfriend's daughter

WEYMOUTH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com ) -- A man shot and killed by Weymouth Police following the stabbing death of his mother has been identified as the father of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh's girlfriend's daughter.

Walsh confirmed that 49-year-old Paul Campbell, who was shot and killed  by Weymouth Police while holding a knife, is the father of Walsh's girlfriend's daughter.

"This is an extremely personal situation and I ask that Lorrie and Lauren's privacy be respected at this time," Walsh said in a statement. "This is an ongoing investigation and it is not my place to speculate on why or how this happened. My focus right now is on my family, Lorrie and Lauren, and their well-being."

Weymouth Police and the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office are investigating an overnight homicide that included the officer-involved shooting.

Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said they were called to a home on Prospect Hill Drive after 1 a.m. for a report of someone needing assistance.

When officers arrived, Morrissey said they found a white male in an agitated state who was holding at least one knife.

Morrissey said the two officers made a simultaneous decision to shoot the man, who later died at a nearby hospital.  He was later identified as Paul Campbell.

Officers also found the body of 72-year-old Patricia Campbell fatally stabbed on the front steps of the home. Officials say it appears Paul Campbell was Patricia Campbell's son.

Investigators would not comment on who made the initial 911 call.

Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes said the incident proves there is no such thing as a "routine call" for any police office.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave under normal protocols.

Neighbors told Fox 25 Campbell lived with his mother when he wasn't traveling to California to audition for roles.

Notably, Campbell was cast in Mark Wahlberg's 2010 movie The Fighter.

"He was a little volatile," said neighbor Marie Dooley, but did not elaborate further.

Some neighbors came to lay flowers on Campbell's steps and said the neighborhood was grieving the loss of both the mother and son.

"She lost her husband about twelve years ago and she was a very nice woman," Dooley said. "It's very unfortunate circumstances."

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the location of where Patricia Campbell was found. She was found on the stairs leading up to the home.
