CHELSEA, Mass. — The man who was hit by a Rockport Line commuter rail train in Chelsea Tuesday has died, officials said.
Chelsea fire officials said the man was found unconscious around 11:30 p.m. after he was hit at the train crossing on Everett Avenue by an inbound MBTA Commuter Rail train. He was transported to Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett where he later died, transit officials said in a Wednesday news release.
Investigators are trying to determine why the man -- who transit police believe is around 50 years old -- was on the tracks when the train was moving through. Police say they believe he was walking on the right-of-way when he was hit and do not suspect any foul play.
In 2017, a person was hit by a train at the same crossing.
The crossing is equipped with lights and a safety gate to alert cars and pedestrians to approaching trains.
